Betsey Johnson and Betseyville
The Second Shop welcomes us to a whole new world of thrift shopping where everything is up-to-date. It’s no question that their exquisitely styled models and professionally taken photos appeal to young and chic bargain hunters. There’s no distinguishable formula to the speedy success of their business but it must be the result of the natural chemistry between store owners Jason Santos and Lexi Gancayco.
The start of a business and/or personal relationship…
Summer of March 2010, partners Lexi and Jason needed a way to make extra money. Although there was going to be no school, that also meant no allowance. We thought of different ways that we could earn, like selling siomai — yes selling siomai! making graphic tees and even accessories. Then out of the blue we just thought of putting up an online thrift shop. Lexi was a fan of thrifting, so why not thrift and sell instead!
Finding treasure by digging…
THE SECOND SHOP. Just by the name, you can already tell what kind of items we sell—second hand. If you encounter the brand name without knowing what exactly it is that we sell, the name might throw you off. You might think of old used/surplus items. But when you visit the site and see what we’re all about, your whole vision on second hand clothing changes.
The Second Shop gives a fresh twist to vintage clothes. We do sell vintage pieces, but vintage is not necessarily our only style. Our style is a fusion of preloved pieces, vintage valuables and trendy treasures, fusing together yesterday’s pieces with today’s setting. Stepping away from the rather “sepia” or “classic” imagery that is associated with the term “vintage”, The Second Shop plays around with every possible color on the spectrum. As you may notice, the site (and) our collections (bursts) of so many colors!
The difference between ours and theirs…
All our products are preloved pieces, vintage valuables and trendy treasures. Items are priced between Php200-500 and sometimes Php100 when we go on sale! One of our trademark pieces are the HIGH&WAISTED Shorts—high-waist shorts in different styles, colors and prints that we have a special album for in every collection. We release a collection every 2 weeks at an announced date where all items can be purchased online through our website.
We want to capture their hearts…
The shop caters to all fashionable women who are ready to stand out and experiment with different styles and looks! The Second Shop likes to experiment with colors and prints. We try to mix and match pieces, textures, prints and colors in ways you would’ve never tried.
The people behind the shop…
The Second Shop is run by Jason Santos (20) and Lexi Gancayco (19). Jason, a 2nd year student taking up BS Biology from UST, takes charge of cleaning, packing, shipping, banking, financing, e-mailing, communicating with customers, etc. He is also The Second Shop’s photographer and master of High waist shorts! Whenever you order anything from the Second Shop, you can be sure that you’re talking to Jason. Lexi, a 2nd year Economics major from UP Diliman, is in charge of the web activity, publicity and advertising, graphics, site maintenance, booking shoots, model searching, styling and thrift shopping.
Lexi confesses how their boy-girl team-up seems to be working for them…
Many people find it funny how Jason is the other half of The Second Shop. We partner really well because we complement each others’ abilities. We’ve been together (in a relationship) for almost 3 years now! :)
These lovebirds are as attractive as their online shop is. It’s hard not to fall in love with their tandem, their products and not to mention, their division of tasks. Time has clearly tested their relationship as each other’s beaus. Now it’s The Second Shop’s turn to test their relationship as business partners.

I chose to feature Lloyda Lim Tan on Valentine’s Week because she has so much love to give— to her family, her 5-month old baby and her vast collection of lace-ups. In return, she receives love from the whole blogosphere. She’s hip, quirky and very young at heart with or without an infant around.
She recently turned 30 but physically, she hasn’t aged a day from her college graduation. She is a working mother to a little boy named Eli, and she doesn’t sacrifice style in spite of the duties demanded by motherhood.
Her fashion history
“I’ve been style blogging since 2004 (in) Enter My Wardrobe when Chictopia and Lookbook weren’t around then. I just got an idea to start posting my daily outfits online since I love to dress up, and would love to chronicle and share what I wore to my online friends.”
Evidently, Lloyda is one of the country’s first what-I-wore bloggers. She stopped updating that blog in 2008 and moved her outfit posts to Fashionista Fortune Cookie, where she also blogs about her personal life. At the same time, she keeps track of her outfits in platforms such as Chictopia and Lookbook.
I am inspired by a lot of things. Everyday things inspire me! I adore Alexa Chung, Kate Lanphear, Emmanuel Alt, the Olsen Twins, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Agyness Deyn. I love their style! I love Rumi Neely. I mean who doesn’t love her? Another is Susie Bubble. I’ve been a huge fan of her quirky style ever since I started following her in StyleDiary even before her ever famous Style Bubble blog.
Her style plays around mannish elements infused with a touch of femininity— a floral maxi with a tank top, classic trousers with a laced top. She personally thinks that her current style is never too girly. Just like other style icons, Lloyda chooses to dress according to her mood. Bet I know what she’s always in the mood for… Lace-ups! Lloyda confesses that the item that would best define who she is is a pair of lace-ups; doesn’t matter if their oxfords or brogues. ;)
Lloyda is an epitome of a well-rounded fashionista. She has a beautiful family of 3, a fulfilling job in retail and while some girls have closets full of bones, she has a closet full of happy thoughts and positivity which translates in all of her photos. Truly, Lloyda is one of the sincerest online fashion buddies you can ever have. She leaves our fashion wisdom tank filled…
“Fashion is something not to be taken too seriously. Nobody can dictate what you can and cannot wear. Have fun & wear whatever what you want! Don’t let other people say otherwise.”

P.S. Here’s a little something I grabbed that surely fills a big chunk of her heart. Belated happy birthday, Lloyda! :)
